Happy girls are the prettiest….that’s how the saying goes, and I believe it. Happiness is about more than just looking pretty, though. It’s about an inner confidence and joy that must be tended to, and cared about. It takes time and effort to become truly happy, and peaceful with yourself. I think it really shows in Kate’s images below, that she is one of those girls. Kate was wonderful to work with, and just a delight to get to know. She has a mile-wide smile, and a gorgeous fashion sense. She also wanted a more natural look, and it came out beautifully. Tons of makeup is not something you have to do, and I am always open to hearing how you want to look in your shoot! I also wanted to share a few ways that I cultivate happiness in my own life:
- Prayer or Meditation: Even if you’re not a religious person, meditation or prayer can be a great way to take time to slow down and really focus on your blessings. I’ve found the more time I devote to being thankful, the more gratitude and joy that I feel.
- Giving to Others: I encourage all of my senior clients to serve somehow in their community. Most of them volunteer with children, or work in their schools or churches, and I think that is just amazing. Those are the types of teens I love to meet. Putting the focus on others through charity work is one of the best ways to find happiness.
- Speak positively about yourself and others: Nothing spirals me into negativity faster than saying ugly things about someone else. The power of words is real, and I really want all of my clients (and myself) to be able to find good things about others. Better yet, say them out loud! Sticky notes on your bedroom mirror with affirmations or verses/poems are a great way to start your day, and giving someone a compliment will always increase your joy!
- Slow down and unplug: Social media can also play a big role in discontent and unhappiness. Take time each week to unplug and step away from the “noise” of Instagram and Facebook. Take a walk or get outdoors, and you may find you really appreciate the things around you.
